1. Identify the surface
Check whether the wall is smooth or textured and whether the paint is fully cured. Wallpaper, unfinished surfaces and loose paint may not be suitable. Read the product instructions for the exact material you plan to use.
2. Check what your rental allows
A removable label does not establish permission to apply a product in a rental. Ask about the intended surface and any move-out requirements before making a change.
3. Test before covering a wall
Where permitted and recommended by the manufacturer, test a small piece in an inconspicuous location. Follow the specified waiting and removal instructions. A small test can help identify a problem but cannot guarantee that a larger installation will remove cleanly.
Before you buy
Do not assume a peel-and-stick product is damage-free. Adhesive, paint condition, humidity, temperature and time can affect removal.
4. Consider an easier alternative
A freestanding screen, framed print or colourful bedding can change the feel of a room without covering the wall. Choose the smallest change that gives you the result you want.
