Check the walkway

1. Keep the route clear

Open your front door fully and walk through the space while carrying a bag. The storage should fit around this route. Measure the narrowest point, including handles, skirting and any furniture that projects into the walkway.

2. Choose the few things that belong here

Start with the belongings used on most trips out: keys, a daily bag and the shoes currently in rotation. Store spare coats and seasonal items elsewhere when possible. A small tray can provide a consistent home for keys without adding another piece of furniture.

3. Make storage easy to use

  • Choose shallow furniture only after checking usable floor space.
  • Use a basket for lightweight items that would otherwise collect on the floor.
  • Keep frequently used belongings within comfortable reach.

Before you buy
Do not obstruct exits, heaters or electrical equipment. Check fixing and anchoring requirements before adding hooks or furniture.

4. Reset the landing spot

Return items that do not belong here to their rooms. If the same belongings keep piling up, change the system to match the habit: add an appropriate container or choose a better location.
